The castle could be considered the most emblematic point of Sagunto. This ancient fortification extends its walls over one kilometer, surrounded by the slope overlooking Sagunto. Walking along the walls is pleasant and offers incredible views of the city and the sea. As you walk, you will find different styles of architecture and additions from different settlements that serve to remember the history of the city, including its influence from Romans, Visigoths, Arabs, and Christians. The Sagunto Castle was declared a National Monument in 1931. In one of its parts, there is the Plaza de Armas, with remains of the Roman forum that the Roman city of Saguntum once had.
Another must-visit destination if you are traveling to Sagunto is its Plaza Mayor. It is not a good option for renting a van in Sagunto, as it is better to park around and walk in this area. The Plaza Mayor was the old center of life of this historic city, and retains all the charm of its memory. In its surroundings, you can visit the remains of the Temple of Diana and the Municipal Palace.
At the foot of the hill on which the castle sits, there is the semi-ruined but still impressive Roman Theater of Sagunto, with a capacity for 8,000 people. You can still enjoy the performances that are held today, at least if you visit in summer.
Furthermore, if you visit this ancient Roman city, do not miss the Casa dels Berenguer, a beautiful Gothic palace dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries. In addition to shining for its wonderful architecture, it houses several temporary exhibitions that are worth seeing.
Although the beach and port area of Sagunto are separated from the city by a strip of countryside, they can be easily reached by a straight Roman road. If you request a car rental in Sagunto, you can easily access its beaches, enjoying not only the culture and streets, but also the sea and relaxation that this ancient Roman village offers you. It is typical to enjoy a swim and end up having a good Valencian paella, the traditional dish that cannot be missed on a visit to any of the cities in the Valencian Community.
